How this calculator works
We grow your current net estate at the rate you set until your planning age, then apply the federal estate tax (40% above the exemption) and any applicable state estate tax. The 2026 sunset of the Tax Cuts & Jobs Act roughly halves the federal exemption — a household worth $20M today that wasn't taxable in 2025 may face a $2M+ federal bill in 2026.
What this calculator does not model
- Lifetime gifting strategies (annual exclusion, SLATs, GRATs, IDGTs)
- Charitable bequests and CRT/CLT structures
- Step-up in basis on appreciated assets at death
- Life insurance held in an ILIT (excluded from the taxable estate)
- Generation-skipping transfer (GST) tax
If your projected bill is $1M+, the right next step is a conversation with your estate attorney and CPA together — not sequentially. WealthScan's whole purpose is to make that three-way conversation possible against a single source of truth.
